What’s it like living up here? (neighbors and neighborhoods)

Well, it’s been a quiet week in Gordon (NW Wisconsin), my home town…

Here in the north woods, it’s actually quite different from the big city you may leave behind.

This area is special; right now the scenery right outside my office window is a snowy winter world and there is a quiet softness to the landscape. The eagles are soaring over the bay—or at least they were a few minutes ago.  And besides the scenery, we also appreciate the opportunity for convenient paddling, fishing, hunting, biking, skiing, birding, and all the rest throughout the year.

But most of all, we’re really grateful for our neighbors and our neighborhood.  Our neighbors are great, and they feel like family.  We have a feeling of belonging and community that we never really had back in the city.  There, we didn’t even know our neighbors who lived two or three doors down.  Here, it’s very different.

Now, we can’t make any guarantees about your future neighbors and neighborhood.  But people tend to be more neighborly around here.  And if people don’t immediately come knocking on your door to say hello, they may just want to give you a moment to unpack.  Don’t be afraid to take a break and go knock on their door.

It’s just the neighborly thing to do.
