Grindstone Lake (Hayward, Wisconsin)

This 3,111-acre lake is located about 6 miles south of Hayward. It has a shoreline of 10.5 miles, a maximum depth of 60 feet, and a mean depth of 29 feet.  In it, you’ll find muskies, northerns, walleyes, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and panfish.  Secchi disk readings are around 11 feet.  If you’d like to do a little exploring, there’s a small channel that connects Grindstone Lake to Lac Court Orielles through Little Grindstone Lake.

Because Grindstone Lake is a trophy fishery, there’s 50-inch minimum size limit on muskies.  To preserve the fishery, most anglers also release fish that are over this length.

As you can see from this aerial, Grindstone is a relatively large, open lake.  Because most of the buildable shoreline has already been developed, vacant lots come on the market more rarely.

Grindstone Lake is just north of Lac Court Orielles and not far from Round Lake and the Chippewa Flowage.  All four are large, especially sought-after lakes where most available homes are in the middle to upper price ranges.

For a smaller lake that tends to be more quiet and less windswept, you may also want to check out Windigo Lake, which lies just west of Grindstone Lake.  There, too, most lake homes and cabins are in the middle to upper price ranges.
