Scenes from another Dam Park in Gordon, Wisconsin

Here are a few scenes from another Douglas County park in Gordon, Wisconsin.

(I’ve already posted a video of a much larger park that’s located about five miles west of Gordon, right at the Gordon Dam. Upstream of the dam, you’ll find the 1900-acre Gordon Flowage, also known as the Saint Croix Flowage. Downstream lies the Saint Croix wild and scenic river way, which begins officially right at the dam. That’s a different dam park.)

This park is located at Mooney Dam, which is at the outlet of Lower Eau Claire Lake. Farther upstream are Middle Eau Claire and Upper Eau Claire Lakes, which are also connected to Bony Lake, Birch Lake, and Robinson Lake. Downstream, the Eau Claire River joins the Saint Croix River at Gordon. So yes, an ambitious canoeist could paddle from one dam park to the other.

The park at Mooney Dam on the Lower Eau Claire has a boat landing, a picnic area, and a campsite that’s a bit smaller than the one at the Gordon Dam. But it’s a great place to spend the weekend when you’re exploring the Eau Claire Chain of Lakes and the surrounding area.

Later, check out some of my other videos—especially the water and bike videos of this particular area. For now, here’s a quick preview the Mooney Dam County park on Lower Eau Claire Lake.

And by the way… If this looks like a neighborhood you’d like to call home, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’d be glad to help you find the lake home or cabin of your dreams. www.JeanHedren.com

Scenes from the Best Dam Park in Gordon, Wisconsin

Here are a few scenes from the Douglas County Park in Gordon, Wisconsin. It’s about five miles west of Gordon, right at the Gordon Dam. Upstream of the dam, you’ll find the 1900-acre Gordon Flowage, also known as the Saint Croix Flowage. (Not to be confused with Upper Saint Croix Lake, which is upstream at Solon Springs.) The Gordon Flowage has a roughly 29-mile shoreline, and is the largest body of water in Douglas County.

Downstream lies the Saint Croix wild and scenic river way, which begins officially right here at the dam. Unofficially, the Gordon Flowage and most of the river upstream between here and Solon Springs are also quite wild and scenic. The park itself has a boat launch, campground, playground, and picnic areas. All in all, it’s just about the best dam park in Gordon.

Please enjoy your visit. And if you decide to stay here in northwest Wisconsin a little longer, I’d be glad to help you find the lake home or cabin of your dreams.

Scenes from Whitefish Lake in Wisconsin’s beautiful Douglas County

Whitefish Lake is one of the deepest, coldest lakes in northwest Wisconsin. This 832-acre lake is located southwest of Gordon, Wisconsin, and northwest of Minong, Wisconsin. Whitefish Lake has a mean depth of 30 feet, a maximum depth of 102 feet, and a shoreline of 6.9 miles. Whitefish is a relatively open, windswept lake, and much of its shoreline is dotted by tall pines. Enjoy the view!

Homes and cabins on the Eau Claire Chain of Lakes, Gordon and Barnes Wisconsin

The Eau Claire chain includes Lower, Middle, and Upper Eau Claire, plus a few smaller lakes of 80-200 acres that are accessible by smaller boats at most water levels.  These include Bony, Pickerel, Robinson, Birch, Schunenberg, Smith, and Sweet.  From Lower Eau Claire, the Eau Claire River flows westward, passing just south of Eau Claire Acres.  Farther downstream, it joins the Saint Croix at Gordon.

The lakes in the Eau Claire chain tend to be deeper and clearer than most lakes in the area.  (Eau Claire, as you may have guessed, is French for “Clear Water.”)  In them, you’ll find muskies, walleye, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappies, bluegills, and perch.  Here are some vital statistics for the three largest lakes:

·      Lower Eau Claire: 802 acres, 7.78 miles of shoreline, maximum depth 41’, 56% greater than 20’ deep, and 4% less than 3’ deep.

·      Middle Eau Claire: 902 acres, 11 miles of shoreline, maximum depth 66’, 40% greater than 20’ deep, and 12% less than 3’ deep.

·      Upper Eau Claire: 992 acres, 9.93 miles of shoreline, maximum depth 92’, 50% greater than 20’ deep, and 4% less than 3’ deep.

More About the Area

Located in the heart of a recreational paradise.  In addition to the Eau Claire river and chain of lakes, you’ll be close to dozens of other lakes and streams that are great for fishing, boating, paddling, and waterfowling.  You’re just minutes from the Brule, the Namekagon, and the Saint Croix Wild and Scenic Riverway.

Nearby, you’ll find trails for ATVing, snowmobiling, biking, hiking, and skiing.  The area is great for both road and mountain biking, and is home to events like the American Birkebeiner and Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival.  You’ll be surrounded by vast areas of public and paper company land that’s open to hunting, hiking, birding, and other recreation.

You can shop for essentials in nearby Barnes, Gordon, or Solon Springs; it’s not much farther to Cable, Hayward, Drummond, or Ashland.  It’s about an hour to Superior or Duluth, and about 2 ½ hours to the Twin Cities.

Near the End of St Croix Rd and the Beginning of St Croix River, Gordon, WI

saint-croix-river-1-copyright-jean-hedren.jpgI’m excited about this new listing just upstream from Gordon, Wisconsin. It’s a rare opportunity—a perfect building site located on a hidden, little-known stretch of the Saint Croix River.

For almost two miles the river widens, slows, and is navigable by pontoons and small fishing boats. There’s almost no current, and fishing pressure is relatively light. Downstream, the river narrows, quickens, and then flows under U.S. 53 and into the Gordon/St Croix Flowage. Upstream, it’s narrower and shallower, too. But for canoeists and kayakers looking for a workout, it’s possible to paddle upstream all the way to Solon Springs. With a short portage, it’s also possible to paddle up Ox Creek into Lower Ox Lake.

This stretch of the river is relatively quiet—unless, as on this particular afternoon, there’s a flock of trumpeter swans in the front yard. They don’t call them trumpeters for nothing.

Lower Eau Claire and Minong Flowage Construction Updates

Lower Eau Claire and Minong Flowage Construction Updates

dam 1 dam 2

As of September 4, Mooney Dam is still under repairs. (This dam is located at the outlet of Lower Eau Claire Lake.) Although the above sign pretty much tells the story, I want to emphasize that the boat landing IS open weekends and evenings during construction. Also noteworthy: because the repairs are being completed behind temporary coffer dams, it hasn’t been necessary to draw down the water levels on Middle Eau Claire Lake.

It looks as though repairs are well underway.

But anyone using this picnic site over Labor Day weekend will need to share…

And a backhoe is still parked across the road. Apparently there’s some digging left to be done.

Meanwhile, over on the Minong Flowage, the Smith Bridge Road bridge replacement is also progressing nicely.

Work began in July, and is expected to be complete in late October.

If you’re one of those skeptics tempted to drive around the sign that says “Bridge Out,” don’t do that. They’re not kidding. But if all goes well, the new one should be finished in another six or eight weeks.
