The Source of the Saint Croix River (Solon Springs, WI)

Near Solon Springs, Wisconsin, the Saint Croix River begins as a small creek flowing from a wetland area just north of Upper Saint Croix Lake. From this same wetland, another small stream flows northward toward Lake Superior. That trickle eventually becomes the Brule River, a world-famous destination for paddlers and anglers.

Imagine a single raindrop that falls precisely in the center of this headwaters area and strikes the edge of a certain alder leaf. After the raindrop splits in two, its northern half travels down the Brule and through all of the Great Lakes before eventually ending up in the Atlantic. Its southern half travels down the Saint Croix River and the Mississippi all the way to Gulf of Mexico. (In theory. In reality, of course, it’s all one big sponge that leaks from both ends.)

The best way to explore this special place without becoming trapped in hip-deep mud while being attacked by bloodthirsty mosquitos? Dress warmly and hike in on a January morning when the temperature is below zero. Or, if that’s not for you, then just sit back and enjoy the video.

saint-croix-river-1-copyright-jean-hedren.jpgI’m excited about this new listing just upstream from Gordon, Wisconsin. It’s a rare opportunity—a perfect building site located on a hidden, little-known stretch of the Saint Croix River.

For almost two miles the river widens, slows, and is navigable by pontoons and small fishing boats. There’s almost no current, and fishing pressure is relatively light. Downstream, the river narrows, quickens, and then flows under U.S. 53 and into the Gordon/St Croix Flowage. Upstream, it’s narrower and shallower, too. But for canoeists and kayakers looking for a workout, it’s possible to paddle upstream all the way to Solon Springs. With a short portage, it’s also possible to paddle up Ox Creek into Lower Ox Lake.

This stretch of the river is relatively quiet—unless, as on this particular afternoon, there’s a flock of trumpeter swans in the front yard. They don’t call them trumpeters for nothing.

The Gordon/St Croix Flowage – Largest lake in Douglas County WI offers great fishing and boating!

One of the best-kept secrets in northwestern Wisconsin is the Gordon/St Croix Flowage.

This lake is large and can handle a fair number of boaters and fishing enthusiasts with plenty of room and lots of enjoyment for everyone. Even at the busiest time of year, this lake never feels crowded. I’m lucky to live on this wonderful lake.

With its 29 miles of meandering shoreline, this 1900-acre flowage is one of the most pristine, quiet lakes remaining in Northwestern Wisconsin. Most of its shoreline is public land that’s unlikely to ever be developed—partly because it’s protected, and partly because it’s low-lying ground that wouldn’t be suitable for development anyway.
Although much of the lake is quite shallow, water quality is good—and so’s the fishing. Abundant structure and aquatic vegetation make the Flowage problematic for water-skiers, but a paradise for anglers, pontooners, and paddlers.

Because the Flowage is relatively undisturbed, you’ll see abundant wildlife. Several pairs of loons, eagles, and ospreys nest here. Please enjoy them from a distance.

What’s in a name?
Our flowage is sometimes called the Gordon Flowage, and sometimes the Saint Croix Flowage—not to be confused with Upper Saint Croix Lake, which is upstream a few miles at Solon Springs. For clarity, it’s sometimes referred to as the Gordon-Saint Croix Flowage. Most days, we just call it “The Flowage.”

What the heck’s a flowage?
If you’re not from the area, this term may be a little mysterious. It’s used to describe the lake formed upstream from a dam. Our flowage was formed by the Gordon Dam. Even before the dam was built, however, a slightly smaller lake formed here naturally.

Welcome to the lake. Enjoy your stay.
